Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association
Education Foundation At A Glance January 2010
A Message from our Chairman

Depetrillo This past year the RI Hospitality Education Foundation has built a solid and respectful reputation among our industry sector and community partners.  This reputation is stronger than ever and as we look to 2010 I am confident that the solid foundation we have built is going to support a variety of new and innovating programs that will meet the hospitality industry's workforce development needs.

In 2009 we were recognized for our efforts with awards from our peers in the tourism and hospitality industry. Most recently, the International Society of Hotel Association Executives and USA Today presented us with an Award of Excellence recognizing the Hospitality: The Third Language™ training program we developed.

With support from our board of directors, our talented staff is ready to build on this success in 2010 with expanded programs.

Is workplace drama affecting your team's performance?  Whether it be workplace romance, personality conflicts or misperceptions, office drama can and will weigh heavy on the shoulders of those employees who care about giving their all to your establishment.

The unfortunate outcome of workplace drama is that team members may start to form less than favorable opinions of each other that will hang over your team like storm clouds as they go about their daily duties. Imagine painting a house with the threat of a thunderstorm looming overhead.  It makes for an uncomfortable situation - a situation that would prevent you from investing the amount of focus that it would take to do the job right.  You'd probably be rushing to finish, keeping an eye out for cover and avoiding opportunities to bond with your crew as it would take precious time that you might not have!  Instances of office drama lead to workplace thunderstorms.

Let's start with an understanding of the common players that drive these uncomfortable situations.

NYLO Hosts Johnson & Wales Students

Central Falls Field TripThe RI Hospitality Education Foundation would like to thank General Manager Christine Nevers, from NYLO Hotel for hosting the Johnson & Wales University American Hotel & Lodging Association student chapter in December.  The students learned valuable tips about working within the hospitality industry and what it takes to succeed.  Nevers spent an ample amount of time answering the many great questions the students came prepared to ask.  Following the successful field trip, one student is currently participating in an internship with the hotel.  We wish all of these students luck on their future endeavors within the hospitality industry.

Students Learn What it Takes to Succeed

Curtis Carlson, General Manager of Homestead Studio Suites guest spoke for the Woonsocket Youth Center about the path to success within the hospitality and tourism industry.  Covering soft and hard skills and how to work your way up through the hospitality ranks, Carlson encouraged the students to get out there and work hard to reach their goals.  Thank you Curtis for your advice and inspirational words.

As always, if you are interested in hosting a field trip, being a guest speaker, working with internship students or volunteering to impact the youth of RI in any way, please contact Kimberly Wardyga, kimberly@rihospitality.org or 401-223-1120 x12.
