What is Active Managerial Control?
Article by Thomas Nerney
Compliance Evaluation and Standardization Officer
Rhode Island Department of Health

If you are a foodservice manager or owner and haven't yet heard the term, "active managerial control," you probably will in the near future. This phrase is used in the food safety regulatory realm to express the obligation of food establishment operators to ensure the food they are offering consumers is safe. According to the FDA, the term means "the purposeful incorporation of specific actions or procedures by industry management into the operation of their business to attain control over foodborne illness risk factors." In simple terms, management must have a food safety system that ensures that the risks presented by the food products and processes used are adequately controlled.

Your Employees' Certification May Not be Valid
The Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) is no longer recognizing food safety certificates that were issued by Dereck Rodrigues. The National Restaurant Association Solutions (NRA Solutions) has been working very closely with the DOH on this investigation. If any of your employees took a course with Mr. Rodrigues their certifications may not be accepted as proof of required training.
NRA Solutions has mailed letters to those individuals that are affected by this finding. We recommend that you double check your employees' certification to ensure that they are in compliance.

The RI Hospitality Association has been working closely with NRA Solutions and the RI Department of Health. We will be providing classes and examinations for anyone that is in need of becoming certified.
