The RI Hospitality Education Foundation (RIHEF) is pleased to welcome 18 new members into our Hospitality Training Academy Alumni Association. Six students from East Bay Skills Alliance (EBSA) Hospitality Training Program and twelve students from Connecting for Children & Families (CCF) Culinary Training Program graduated with certifications and jobs.  Both training programs provided work readiness skills including communication, team work and customer service.  Resume writing and interview skills were an essential part of the training program, as well as career exploration and career mapping.  The students had the opportunity to obtain ServSafe® Food Handler or Manager’s Certifications and ServSafe Alcohol® certifications.

Six of the students completed the S.T.A.R.T. certification program from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute, an internationally-recognized certification, where they learned about the various line level positions at hotels and job specific duties and skills.  The program includes a 40 hour internship that must be completed in order to obtain a credential from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute, Certified Front Desk Representative (CFDR) or Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP). Thank you to our member employers; the Hyatt Regency Newport, Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina, Providence Biltmore and Pranzi Catering, for your assistance in training these students.

The other twelve students graduated from Connecting for Children & Family’s culinary arts training program.  The 12 week program teaches culinary art skills as well as financial literacy training. Funding for the program was provided by the Governor’s Workforce Board Innovative Grant.  After 12 weeks of hands-on-training with Chef Jaime, the students complete a 100 hour internship to gain work experience.  This is a tremendous commitment on the employers’ part and we thank them for their support in helping prepare students for the workforce. Other members assisted with Mock Interviews and providing crucial feedback to the students.  Member employers include Angelo’s Palace Pizza, Chelo’s Banquets and Catering, Newport Harbor Corporation Pranzi Catering, SnapChef and Twin River.  Currently, all twelve of the students are working or completing their internships.

Thank you to EBSA and CCF for their outstanding efforts in developing and training unemployed and underemployed adults in culinary arts and hospitality.  They are helping RI Hospitality Education Foundation supply work ready candidates to help fill the increasingly, large number of open hospitality positions there are in the state of RI.
