SkillsUSA Championships were held from June 21st through June 24th in Louisville, KY.  Over 6,500 students competed in 100 occupational and leadership skill competition areas from across the country.  The state of Rhode Island had 29 students place in the top 10 of their respective fields of study.  Chariho Area Career & Technical Center’s very own Arianna Angilly placed 6th nationally in the Culinary Arts Events.  In order to get to National’s, Arianna had to compete twice in the state of RI.  First, she had to compete against students from Chariho Area Career & Technical Center, where only two could compete at states.  She then had to compete against all of the culinary competitors from across the state.  Arianna then moved on to the National competition where she had to compete against 47 other students.  The competition consisted of knife cuts, stocks, soups, salad and a chicken dish.  Chef Instructor Linda Musch said “Arianna has the ability to catch on quickly and her success has come from that ability.  As a first year student, she has gained much knowledge and basic skills that can help her succeed.  With time and a practice, she will master the basics.  So often students do not see the benefit of proper knife cuts, but when they see their scores, they then realize when the chef wants julienne you better cut it for them.”

Arianna completed all of this during her first year in the ProStart program.  She entered the program because she wanted to get experience and really enjoys cooking.  After the first year, she fully intends on completing the ProStart program for the remainder of high school.  Susan Votto, Director of Chariho Area Career & Technical Center, said “This is exciting for Arianna and our school.  Arianna is a very focused and committed student.  She has proven her passion for the culinary field within her first year of the program.”

While Arianna is not currently employed, she is looking to secure a position within the culinary industry to help improve her skills further.  Arianna is currently preparing with her fellow classmates to compete in San Antonio, TX for the American Pulse Association’s Great School Lunch Contest on July 10.
